The plight of the Iraqi women

Most Iraqi women have seen their rights eroded in all areas of life while the world just observes without doing anything about it.
Women are victims of rape, sex trafficking, forced and early marriages, murder, and abduction for sectarian or criminal purposes; many are driven or forced into prostitution. Women easily fall victims to the use of force by members of Iraqi and the multi-national forces, including during raids on private homes. Often to avoid the constant cycle of violence, many turn to suicide; a clear message of utter despair the world chooses to ignore!
The so-called ‘honour killings" are in fact rising at a fast pace being perpetrated often with impunity, or against lenient sentences charged under the present Iraqi Penal Code. Women therefore are reluctant to even report sexual attacks lest they would be ostracized or even killed either by their family or organized community gangs, and other militia groups.
These killings are the primary causes of unnatural deaths among women in the Kurdish regions. Medical personnel operating in Iraqi Kurdistan and women’s rights activists report that incidents of self-immolations are on the increase, with many either unreported or concealed as mere accidents.
The Security Council, in its Resolution 1820 demands that all parties to an armed conflict cease all acts of sexual violence against civilians, especially women and children. It is time our world leader’s look into these issues. (J.f-r).
